HAISF implemented the Awesome Kids Program(AKP) to address deviance, behavioral and angermanagement issues. Deviant behavior is caused by complex interactions of psychological, sociological, economic and biological forces that encourage individuals to rebel against societal norms. HAISF has identified over the past year that children practice deviant behaviors in most cases as a mode for survival(i.e. theft, fighting, drug distribution and sales etc.).
The 20 week awesome kids program teaches the development of individual coping skills, problem-solving skills, empathy for others, anger management techniques, effective communication, active listening, and how to connect with oneself and others.
The awesome kids program utilizes curriculum from the evidence based practice Thinking for a Change Model (T4C).T4C stresses interpersonal communication skills development and confronts thought patterns that can lead to problematic behaviors. The AKP curriculum uses as its core, a problem solving program embellished by both cognitive restructuring and social skills interventions. While each of the concepts are presented systemically, the participant quickly learns and appreciates that cognitive restructuring does require some cognitive skills methods, as does cognitive skills require an objective, systematic approach to identifying thinking, beliefs, attitudes, and values.
